Pasadena Hosts Cheeseburger Week January 10th to January 15th

PASADENA NOW - Pasadena Hosts Cheeseburger Week January 10th to January 15th

Staff Reports

Pasadena celebrates Cheeseburger Week from Sunday, January 10, to Friday, January 15, 2016, to commemorate how 16-year-old Lionel Sternberger first put cheese in the burger and served it to a customer at the Rite Spot, what used to be roadside stand along Colorado Blvd., in 1924.

The story goes that the teenager was helping his father serve burgers, and while distracted burned one side of the patty. To cover his mistake, he slapped a piece of cheese on top of the patty and served it. The customer loved it, and the rest is history. For years the Steingerber family continued to serve what they later called the Aristocratic Burger for 15 cents apiece, even when the Rite Spot became a bigger restaurant later on.

That’s the story that the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, Cheeseburger Week’s major sponsor, has been promoting since they started Cheeseburger Week about four years ago.

This year, up to 40 of Pasadena’s favorite restaurants, lounges and burger joints will be offering their signature burgers, special creations and deals to customers. Customers can even organize their own Cheeseburger Crawl, where friends go out and visit three or four participating restaurants to sample their burgers, ordering one and splitting it three or four ways, then doing the same at the next place.

Before the week is over, customers will have a chance to vote for their favorite burgers in the Cheeseburger Challenge, with categories such as who makes the best lunch counter burger, the best veggie cheeseburger, or who serves the best beverage with a burger.

Among the restaurants that are offering delicious burgers on Cheeseburger Week are Green Street Restaurant, Alondra Hot Wings, Pie ‘n Burger, Lucky Baldwin’s Pub in Old Pasadena, Lucky Baldwin’s Trappiste Pub near PCC and Lucky Baldwin’s Delirium Cafe in Sierra Madre), a/k/a Bistro, Central Park Cafe, DusitD2 Hotel Constance Pasadena, Dog Haus and Dog Haus Biergarten, The Walrus and the Hedgehog, and Vertical Wine Bistro in Old Pasadena.

Specially created burgers will be available at El Portal, Vertical Wine Bistro, The Counter and Kings Row Gastropub.
